A LITTLE SLICE OF HEAVEN

Cornflake Chicken, Uncle Matt’s Pancakes,
Lovacott “Yum-Yums” and Stabby Stabby Biscuits!

Just a few of around 100 delicious and unusual recipes from ‘A Little Slice of Heaven’, a cookery book developed by Master Chef Peter Gorton with the children and families of Children’s Hospice South West to help raise money for a second Hospice in the south west of England.

Peter Gorton, who is joint proprietor of multi-award winning Horn of Plenty Country House Hotel & Restaurant near Tavistock in Devon, knows personally what parents have to cope with when their child is ill. When his daughter Rheanna was 15 months old, shortly after she had an MMR jab, she suffered a series of severe problems.

"She's doing well now but the time we spent in hospital with her not knowing if she would survive was agonising," he said. "She stopped talking and walking and started fitting. It was really disturbing."

Rheanna has since made a full recovery but the anxiety Peter and his wife Kaz experienced left a lasting impression, and led Peter to become a dedicated fundraiser for Children's Hospice South West. Customers at the hotel and restaurant have already raised over £10,000 from recent charity lunch donations over the past two years.

Little Bridge House is a haven for children suffering from life-threatening or life-limiting conditions and is the only children’s hospice in the south west of England - as a result is oversubscribed.

The charity aims to raise £15 million for a second hospice, Charlton Farm, near Bristol. A new hospice would enable 200 more families every year to take advantage of the care Children's Hospice South West provides.

“I spent a wonderful time cooking with the children at the Hospice to create some of the recipes in the book,’ said Peter. "Children are wonderful to cook with because they are so honest - if they don't like something they will say!” he added.

“Children’s Hospice South West is pleased that yet again Peter Gorton has taken time from his busy schedule to support and contribute to the children’s recipe book,” said George Cameron, Head of Fundraising at the Hospice.
